WMAC Masters: A 90s Martial Arts Phenomenon

Imagine a show that combines the intensity of Mortal Kombat, the thrill of American Gladiators, and the drama of 80s-90s WWF. Welcome to WMAC Masters, a cult classic that captivated audiences in the mid-1990s.

WHAT MADE WMAC MASTERS UNIQUE?

  • Blend of Reality and Fantasy: The show seamlessly merged real martial arts techniques with fictional storylines, creating an engaging experience for viewers.
  • Ki-Symbols and Dragon Belt: Each WMAC Master had a Ki-Symbol, reflecting their personality, values, and fighting style. Defeating opponents earned them Ki-Symbols to add to their Dragon Belt, ultimately leading to a challenge for the coveted Dragon Star.
  • Life Lessons: Each episode conveyed valuable life lessons, adding depth to the action-packed narrative.

THE DRAGON STAR

The Dragon Star is a gold trophy shaped like a shuriken surrounded by a dragon, symbolizing the ultimate prize for the best martial artist in the world.  The 8 Points of the Dragon Star represented the 8 points on how a true martial artist would live. The 8 Points are:

  • Discipline
  • Courage
  • Forgiveness
  • Compassion
  • Honor
  • Wisdom
  • Loyalty
  • Respect

The quest for the Dragon Star was the central theme of WMAC Masters.  To compete for the Dragon Star, a master had to achieve Full Dragon Belt status by acquiring 10 opponents' Ki-Symbols. Once achieved, they would face the current champion in a match atop a rotating platform. The match would continue until one of the two masters was knocked off the platform, and the master left standing would be declared the Dragon Star Champion.

BATTLE ZONES

Filmed at Universal Studios Florida, the show's production style was noteworthy, with battles taking place on elaborate closed sets, accompanied by an omniscient narrator, on-screen scoring, and health gauges.

  • Ghost Town: A wild west-themed setting with abandoned buildings, saloons, tumbleweeds, wagon wheels, and haystacks, accompanied by constant thunder and lightning, filmed at the Wild, Wild, Wild West Stunt Show stage.
  • Doom City: A city scene with wreckage, burning buildings, and searchlights roaming around the area, filmed as part of Kongfrontation.
  • Mayan Mystery: A Mayan courtyard scene with waterfalls, climbable boulders, and Mayan face carvings, filmed on the Animal Actors Stage.
  • Dark Alley: A city slum scene set in an alleyway with brick buildings, balconies, and dumpsters, filmed in the New York area of.
  • Pressure Pit: An underground battle zone with crates, construction, and high air pressure that can cause ear and nose bleeding.
  • Arena Rapid Transit System: An underground subway station setting with subway cars transporting ninjas to the battle, filmed in the Earthquake ride.
  • Stone Valley: A forest-like setting with trees, boulders, waterfalls, and ponds.
  • Nuclear Nightmare: A battle zone set among nuclear power plants.
  • Danger Dock: A harbor setting with boardwalks, shacks, and a courtyard area by the river, filmed in the San Francisco Area.

BATTLEDOME FINALS

The winners of the preliminary matches would face off in the Battledome, a 2-minute match where fighters scored points by forcing their opponents into the cage wall. The fighter with the most points won, and in case of a tie, they'd compete in sudden death.

Fighters earned points by knocking their opponents into the cage wall.

Ninjas could also intervene, and if they forced a fighter into the cage, the opponent would score points.

The winner would receive their opponent's Ki-Symbol, which they'd add to their Dragon Belt.

In some episodes, six masters would participate in a Super Challenge, fighting against ninjas in 45 seconds.

The top four scorers would then compete in a 4-man Battledome final, with the winner receiving three Ki-Symbols from the defeated opponents.  In 4-man Battledome finals, ninjas would not enter the Battledome.
